Sad Day In Tech

If you are into technology then you've probably been following the story of James Kim, a former TechTV analyist and Cnet correspondent. His family went missing just around Thankgiving in the mountains of Oregon.

His wife and two young children were saved, but unfortunately James did not survive. His body was found yesterday in the mountains of Oregon three days after going out to find help for his family. They say he traveled 10 miles through the treacherous terrain in freezing temperatures to find help for his family before hypothermia finally took his life. Superhuman indeed...

I never knew James, but being a long time TechTV loyalist and member of the TWiT Army, I couldn't shake the sense of loss I had for our community and the Kim family.

I ask anyone who reads this to send your prayers to the Kim family in their time of need.

New Toys

Tis' the season..but unlike other seasons I have a few new toys to show off.

Sony Ericsson W810
The most recent is my new cell phone, the Sony Ericsson W810. It was time for an upgrade from my Samsung E317 flip phone and I decided to go all out. The W810 is a candy bar style phone similar to the Chocolate, sporting an mp3 player, 2mp camera, FM radio (i like this), and Pro Duo memory card support (i like this too).

I have to be honest, with all the heat Sony has been getting regarding the ps3 and faulty batteries I was pretty nervous when deciding to get this phone. However, the majority of the reviews for this phone have been good and after getting my hands on it I have to say that I'm very pleased.

The software the came with the phone kinda sucks, which was expected, but luckly I can transfer music, themes, ringtones, and wallpapers just by dragging files directly to the folders on both the mac and windows. The camera is probably the best I've seen on a phone and has most of the options that my Sony DSC-L1 (4.1mp) has. One feature that I stumbled upon was the SoS distress light. Where the light above the lens of the camera pulses the sos distress call. Normally I wouldn't care much for such a feature, but in light of recent events I'm kinda glad that they went out of the way to add it in there.

I love that this phone has an FM radio. I would always like to continue listening to my morning radio when I leave for work, but was unable too since I don't have a portable FM tuner. The mp3 player is great, not because its an mp3 player but due to the fact that the phone supports the pro duo memory sticks. I can put up to 2gigs into this thing (currenty at 1gig) and have a decent amount of music on me at all times, unlike other itunes players, which are also dependent on the itunes music store. With this I can add whatever I want in many different formats.

Sony may have dropped the ball with the ps3, but they didn't with this phone.

Nintendo Wii
I was luck to get my hands on one of these a week after launch and I have to say that "playing is definitely believing." I had about 3 entries worth of story telling on how I was able to get one of these but I opted to just give my review of the system in the end.

I started with Wii Sports after getting the console set up and online.
Tip: If you have trouble connecting to your router use the first of the 4 wep keys instead of the pass phrase you created.

Actually I lied :P. I started to create my Mii (digital representation of myself) which was pretty fun. After creating myself I jumped into Wii Sports and was amazed at how much fun it was. Note: If you pick up the Nintendo Wii definitely pick up and addition remote because this console screams multi player. I couldn't put it down and it was about three days before I touch the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Twilight shows off how well an action adventure game can be done on the Wii and after playing it for a while I felt kinda disspointed going back to my regular controls for my other console.

In the end the benefits of the Nintendo Wii definitely out weighs the cost of the unit, unlike that other system. :P

Tag! You're not it?

So many of you may have heard of this ban on the game tag. You know...that game that has been played by children for generations? What disturbs me is not the fact that school districts across the country are banning the game, but that people are actually utilizing brain cells to come to the decision to ban the game.

Look at it this way. Now I'm not expert on how policies are created in school systems, but I have a general idea. So one person (all it takes is one) got it in there heads, that it would be a good idea to ban a game that they know won't decrease the number of accidents a child suffers. That person then brought this idea to a committee or some policy making/enforcing body in that school district. THEN (again I'm assuming) there had a to be a MAJORITY vote (notice emphasis on 'majority') to have the game banned at recess in the schools of that district. You see it took more than one assclown to get this game banned.

They say that they did this to 'protect the children from injury.'(I didn't think this was possible) What these people fail to understand is that it isn't the game that causes the injury, but the running. And good luck trying to enforce a 'no running rule' with kids. Many have tried, few have succeeded.

PS3 price announced.

Today at their pre-e3 press conference Sony announced the price of the PS3. It is $499 for a 20 GB HDD and $599 for a 60 GB HDD.

- I think Rick James said is best when he was on Chappelle show, "Cocaine is one hell ova drug." And it seems that one major electronics manufacturer has had one hit too many. With rising gas prices expected to continue do they honestly think that people will pay out this much money?

Now with the addons for the 360, the xbox and the cheapest version of the ps3 are about the same price, however addon games which will no doubt cost more and a controller which is rumored not to have the "shock" function and its not worth it for a good gaming experience.

Also how long do you expect the cheaper $500 version to last? I expect Sony to pull a Microsoft and say "oohh nooeess we seem to have run out of the cheaper version, guess your only choice will be the more expensive one." (^_^) Then Sony will probably discontinue the cheaper one towards the latter end of next year. With this Sony is skating on thin ice. At least they changed the batarang controller. hehe

Mc...Breakfast?

I've talked a lot of trash about McDonanlds in the past, saying how bad it is and what not, but recently I was introduced to McDonald's breakfast menu. I was shocked and awed at the fact that I actually liked it. Actually I only like two of the items on there the McGriddle and the breakfast burrito. I don't plan on being a regular at the fast food chain, but its good to know that I have more options in the breakfast area.

I found out something somewhat dissapointing today. I was talking with a friend who informed me that they killed Jean Grey in the xmen comics. Apparently it had something to do with her phoenix powers. We both agreed that they'll probably keep her dead until popularity gets too low and they need to make more money. LOL.

Introducing Nintendo Wii

Revolution gets an official name. Not much info on this yet, but I for one think that Revolution was a perfectly good name for the system.

- The internet seems to be in a frenzy over Nintendo's choice for its next gen console. I must admit that it caught me off guard at first, but the more I think about it and understand the reasons why, I start to like it more and more. The "Revolution" made sense. It actually described what Nintendo was doing with the system, and that was revolutionizing the gaming industry. And yeah "revolution" sounded cooler, but Wii is simple easy to remember and pronounce.

Wii also symbolizes Nintendo's long time goal of bringing everyone together...I believe the phrase goes "Not you, or us but Wii". Also the name is just fun to use in conversation.

"So what were you doing all night?"

"Oh I was just playing with my Wii." (^-^)

Can't wait to see what they unveil at E3.

Just a reminder, remember to take a break from playing with your Wii too much. You don't want to hurt yourself.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

So just recently everyone's attention was brought to the windows of our office after we recived word that there was a fight going on, on the streets below. We got to the windows only to see one guy stumbling about (obviously drunk or high) and another skinnier fella yelling at him. There was not real physical altercation, none that we saw anyway and our attentions returned back to finishing up the days work.

It's amazing how as humans we are naturally drawn to chaos. This sort of thing is common place in high schools and colleges, but it feels kinda awkward in the corporate world. Eh, what cha gonna do?

In other news - Apparently they don't make optical lens cleaners for the PSP, at least no brick and mortar store carries them anyway. The only one I found was on amazon for about 15 bucks. The guy at the nearby Gamestop was also just as shocked as I was stating that he has never seen one. Weird coming from a guy who sells games and gaming accessories for a living.

It's late so I'm gonna keep this brief.  I just got my hands on a new 12" Apple Powerbook and it is sweet.

I'm actually writing this entry using a Blogger widget that I just downloaded.  Very cool indeed.  Unfortunately there is not Xanga widget..at least I don't think there is.  Anywho off to bed.
